I really enjoyed the guest speaker, the presentations and the reading this week. The topic of advertising for pubic health is very interesting to me although not something I think I would be able to do personally.
Starting with the reading for the week, I liked that it was an easy read that was to the point and demonstrated how corporations promoting sales of their cereal can also sell health. Since the article was about a promotion done in the 80's it was interesting to see how it was cutting edge then to claim some health advantage when selling an everyday product. Now however, it seems like almost every product is claiming some health advantage an it become harder for people to really know what is good for them. I think now the focus should be on bringing awareness to health organizations like NCI that really do promote health and teach people how to recognize them so they can be smart shoppers and consumers of health.
As for the guest speaker, I thought he was very inspirational and motivated me personally to try and reach out to someone very close to me who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. I thought it was very interesting how he explained that like selling any other product, selling health comes down to the money that can be made in the corporate sector so having an angle that honestly promotes health and benefits both the buyer and seller can be a win win situation. I never really though of health as a product for sell but why shouldn't it be?
Lastly the presentations this week were both very relevant and informative and for the most part I really enjoyed them. It was helpful to see examples of good adds and bad adds and specific applications to public health.
