Pinkbook and Diabetes: what a week!

Hey all! I think Jessica did a nice job of summarizing the readings. I felt like they were informative and provided clear concise information, and were easy to read. I don't know that they stimulated as much thought as some of the previous readings have, but I think that's because they were handbooks, meant to be a guide. And they served their purpose well.

As for class, it was a good review on what formative research is and when it is used...and it made me thank my lucky stars that I took a sport psychology class a few years ago that discussed the differences between qualitative and quantitative work and focus groups :) So it much more of a review than anything else...which for me was nice.
When Shelia talked about creating a trusting environment and letting the group just chat at the beginning to do that it made me think of when I coached my little ones (under 9's). We used to use the same technique to get the team to bond, so they would get out of school and when they came to practice they could chat all they wanted during warm up before practice actually started. That method seemed to work really well with them. Sorry Random tangent.

Anyway, thats all I have with regard to class this week.

  1. OK its already the end of the module so we have to include other things...here goes:

    3 Key insights
    - media and communication messages are everywhere all around us, we are bombarded with messages constantly, but we somehow filter through most of them to not become overwhelmed.
    - We need to make different messages for different types of people so that we get whatever our message is out there because if presented one way it may get filtered.
    - Formative research is a key concept in order to allow us to be successful with having our message reach certain segments of the population.

    Readings/Class Useful/confusing:
    - Readings I particularly found useful were the Maibach article as well as the 2 handbooks. They presented a lot of beneficial information that can actually be applied.
    - For me the class period that we discussed high/low messages is still confusing and my questions from last weeks blog have not been addressed. So that is still my sticking point.

Open questions/what else do you want to know:
    - Honestly, I'm not sure. I don't really know enough about media or communication to have any open questions. I'm just trying to take in as much as I can because I want to actually apply it. I want to do research and implement interventions so understanding how to communicate with various populations/segments as well as learning different communication skills is what I want to know. Oral communication is less of a sticking point for me because I taught an undergrad class for 3 years, guest lectured multiple times and I coached for 6 or 7 years before that. So I have a lot of experience with oral communication. I think for me its more about understanding how to efficiently and effectively communicate to a community via email, newsletter, pamphlets etc that I'm looking for. So I looking to build my skills more than anything else.
