Course Insight

Hey Group! This is what I posted on Blackboard in the Discussion section: While I like the substance abuse groups idea, I just don't feel that I can adequately respond this week. Coming from the Exercise Physiology realm, studying health communication is a new topic for me, with the way the class is doing it. In our course work we discuss how to convey messages on the individual level and these messages are not based in theory, but in practice. I like both, I like understanding the physiology and biological process behind the health issues and then being able to understand how to apply it to a particular group.

This weeks assignments and class discussions offered me quite a bit of insight and opened my mind up to communication on other levels beyond the individual. The Theory at a Glance reading, while long, was interesting and it was beneficial to see the multiple theories and their key concepts laid out in a chart form. It was also beneficial to see how theory is applied with real life examples. Overall I felt the paper was very helpful. The Scholten reading went over my head. I can't even begin to ask questions because I'm not sure what it is I do not understand. I read it and I understood the words I read, but not their meaning. I think because they were discussing communication theories that I did not have any background with, I just didn't receive a lot of the information.

I think the course is going to beneficial with learning how communication applies to various areas, populations, and topics and I think it will help me step outside of the box a bit.

  1. totally feel 'ya on the Scholten reading. . .it took me SEVERAL rereading attempts to partially overcome the "is this in Mandarin?" sensation for some portions of that article!

  2. Good to know. Some of the readings are from prior Health Com classes. It's nice to know which are clear and which are not so I can make adjustments in the future.
