Hey all. I agree with Kristi that the readings were really straightforward.
The article on health literacy particularly struck out to me, when it stated that "Almost half of our adult population has deficiencies in reading or computational skills", with the vast majority being white, native-born Americans. I always took education for granted and didn't realize how many Americans are illiterate, and how this really affects understanding of their health. Personally there have been times at the Doctor where there were health terms that I did not understand, but was too embarrassed or hurried to stop and ask for a clear definition. I can only imagine how disadvantaged populations must feel.
The Smog Readability to determine level of writing is a great way to make sure that we are creating educational materials that match the population we are targeting. But I also agree with the health literacy reading that even educated audiences enjoy messages that are simple, as Sheila said in class K.I.S. "Keep It Simple" (Although I remember in grade school adding another S at the end, S= Stupid :P )

The reading/ lecture on word of mouth communication was also really interesting. It's amazing how information spreads so fast about products, movies, news events, etc especially via the internet. I find that a lot of breaking news stories are posted immediately on networking sites such as facebook just minutes after it is announced. For example, when the 'iPad' was released, I had no idea what it was, but kept seeing numerous status updates/ posts expressing either ridicule or delight in the product. This prompted me to research what the product was.
Also, I rely heavily on sites such as yelp.com, rottentomatoes.com, or amazon.com for reviews on restaurants, movies, and products. I definitely see these reviews of real-life customers as more trustworthy than asking a sales representative or worker. It makes you wonder how effective advertising really is in persuading people to purchase a product, watch a movie, etc..
Well that's all for this post... I hope you all have a great week!

P.S. Kristi, I really enjoyed your presentation on your study. Good luck to you at the conference! i'll be anxious to hear how it goes!
