I thought last weeks readings were insightful, especially after reading my extra credit book titled Health Literacy. It goes into more depth about Health Literacy and provides recommendations to help improve American’s health literacy. It was shocking to hear that nearly half of all American adults had difficulty understanding and acting upon health information and the larger shock was that older Caucasian population were more have low health literacy.
The “hard-to-reach” audience article was interesting because when I thought about it more, we as health promotion specialists, usually intervene in populations with low SES, low literacy, and ethnically diverse communities so it would be beneficial to know more about our audience.
Word-of-mouth communication is important too because according to the literature, WOM can be more effective than mass media marketing. This is huge because if someone spreads misinformation, it can cause a huge backlash for those who choose to believe it, but it can also be used to spread information that people may not comes across on their own and are considered “low risk.”
I look forward to seeing the questionnaire responses so we can begin our profiling /segmentation!!
